Filed under: Uncategorized — shorewoodwakenshaw at 8:39 am on Tuesday, May 20, 2008

Ok, so i was driving home from school right after cheer practice. Then out of no where there was this huge crash and these two cars just like got into a car accident. Oh My God it was so scary. I didn’t know what to do, but i felt really bad for the people and i was so scared, so i walked over to the people in the car that looked more crashed, and i was so concerned, and asked the lady how she was doing? She said she was fine, but still i wasn’t sure and i wanted to make sure she was ok, so i gave her a hug and i called 911 immediatley! I was so mad at the other car, because they crashed into this innocent old lady, but seriously how could i be mad what if they were hurt too. I felt really bad, so i went over to the other car and made sure everything was ok. Everything was ok so i left.

A Raisin in the Sun- Character Analysis

Filed under: Uncategorized — shorewoodwakenshaw at 8:37 am on Tuesday, May 20, 2008

Please start if you finish the movie early. Blog Post: Choose 3 characters in the movie and explain what the character wants and what obstacles that character faces. In the end, does the character get what he/she wants? If so, how? If not, is that a good thing? What does the ending on the movie seem to be suggesting about the possibilites of people to get ahead?

1) WALTER: he is the main character in the play that wants his life to be better, and doesn’t always want to be opening car doors for a living. Throughout the play he tries his hardest to solve the problems his family faces.

2) Benetha: she is the daughter and Walter’s sister. She is very smart and goes to college. She wants to be a doctor, but it’s difficult for her in the situation her family is in.

3) Mama has very strong morals and is religious. She wants to help her entire family find their way to a bigger and better place.

Racism…

Filed under: Uncategorized — shorewoodwakenshaw at 8:34 am on Tuesday, May 20, 2008
  1. Why did the author think the U of Chicago test revealed that he was racist? Is he right?
    1. He thinks that the test showed that he was racist because, he seemed to shoot blacks quicker than he would shoot whites. I don’t think that shows hes racist.
  2. Do these tests measure “unconscious” racism? Why do you think so?
    1. These tests do measure unconscious racism a little bit, because what you choose to do depends on what your brain thinks at that instant.
  3. Why does the author think that sexism may be harder to fight than racism? What research suggests this?
    1. I think that sexism is harder to fight than racism, because it’s something thats always obvious whether you are male or female, and very important in the american society, beacuse everywhere we go people are asking what gender you are, like on job applications or even at school they will divide it into a “girls” and “boys” side. They put people of different races in basketball jerseys and their race was the first thing looked at.
  4. Paraphrase this quote: The challenge for women competing in politics or business is less misogyny than unconscious sexism: Americans don’t hate women, but they do frequently stereotype them as warm and friendly, creating a mismatch with the stereotype we hold of leaders as tough and strong.
  5.     this quote is saying that women are known to be warm and cuddly so they shouldn’t be seen as leaders because they don’t have the strength to lead like men are thought to of.

  6. What is the real problem women face according to the author? What do you think?
    1. the problem women are facing is they can’t get rid of the stereotypes. I think they should be looked at as equals to men, because we can do exactly the same things as men and maybe even better.
  7. How can this problem be confronted according to the author? What do you think?
    1. I think the problem can be confronted if people just realize that women aren’t always the weaker sex, and then they will be looked at as equals.

DSP/A RAISIN IN THE SUN

In the DSP’s i thought the most interesting ones were the one where people actually acted in them or when they used cut out people and moved them around on the white board. I thought it was really funny in Marwan’s groups story how they used subtitles, because you could still follow and understand the story but it made it a lot funnier I think that the conflicts of race in our country are so much better than they used to be, but there is still conflicts between races it just depends on the situation.  Your race doesn’t have a major impact on your status in America, although there are trends we are technically a “free” country now, so there should be the same opportunities for all races. Unfortunately not all racism has been erased so there are still situations where race is looked at. At my job i have experienced people from different races, and they are treated the same and some of the hardest workers even though they can’t clearly speak English, but they still try their hardest and are really nice people and not judged by their race. I think race relations are going to get better, but there will always be the issue. The race issue is impacting the U.S. right now with Obama running for president, and some people are factoring his race.

Digital Storytelling

Our story is going to be set in a casino in Las Vegas where the main character wants to follow the family business of cheating the system on the slot machines. He creates a new device where he can do that and in the end catches the guy that killed his dad, and gets away with his scheme of cheating the machines and is the good guy after all.

POWER

Jimi Hendrix: “When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.”

I disagree with this quote, because it depends how the power is being used. In some situations the power can be used in a harmful way, and it that way i would agree with the quote, because the power of love is always going to be better than the “power” that can be used in a harmful way. Some people who love power for example those who love the power of owning an organization or a business that is for a good cause can show peace for the world, and it that way the love of power is equal to the power of love. Another situation where the love of power isn’t necessarily bad would be it a situation when someone could get hurt and take the power in their hands to turn the situation over and make it something better. I think what Jimi Hendrix is ultimately saying from this quote is that the power of love is what represents peace and the world hasn’t reached that point yet, so once we do all really feel and have the power of love over the love of power then there will be peace for everyone. I don’t think the world will ever actually get to that point, because there are too many people that are obsessed with power and only want to be successful in life. If there wasn’t the want and need for being the best then i could see people turning to the power of love, but that seems nearly impossible since everyone already has at least one enemy probably, so right there that would ruin the “power of love.”

a) a reflection on whether you think the laws work, should work, or are moral to follow

Law 2: NEVER PUT TOO MUCH TRUST IN FRIENDS, LEARN HOW TO USE ENEMIES - be wary of friends-they will betray you more quickly, for they are easily aroused to envy. They also become spoiled and tyrannical. But hire a former enemy and he will be more loyal than a friend, because he has more to prove. In fact, you have more to fear from friends than from enemies. If you have no enemies, find a way to make them.

I think this law does make some sense in some aspects, because “true” friends really shouldn’t betray you but then again there is always that part of them that wants what is best for themselves rather than for their friends. Everyone is selfish and only thinks about themselves really, even though society may see it as stuck-up to only consider yourself in some situations. When you and your friends hang out you begin to spoil each other with certain things you do, and it almost becomes a routine, and its something that happens every day and if it doesn’t happen then there is a bump in the friendship, which leads to anger and then that can lead to a person betraying some of their best friends. So if you do have enemies, and then you begin to become friends with them again, and it’s their choice to be friends with you again then they will want to show you that they are the best, and do everything in the power to prove that they are a very loyal friend. This is really only true in certain situations and isn’t a very moral thing to do, and also it doesn’t make much sense, because why would you want to “reunite” with an enemy if they were your enemy in the 1st place, doesn’t that just mean you didn’t wanna be friends with them any more, and thats why you’ve moved on to new friends that really if they are your true friends shouldn’t betray you. This law could work though, because when your mad at someone and then the madness goes away it’s almost like a fresh new start, so your really friendly and loyal to each other at least for a little bit…

For my lost chapter in the book Speak I’m going to do Melinda in her English class where she feels like the outcast, and everyone in that class is very open and likes to share the things they write. She is going to have to give a speech on the most influential person in her life and why she thinks so.

The Dumbing of America

Filed under: Uncategorized — shorewoodwakenshaw at 12:45 pm on Sunday, March 9, 2008

What is the author (Jacobs) trying to convince you is true. Quote one sentence in which she clearly states what she believes

The author is trying to convince you that america is getting stupider and loser their intellectual greatness. “Americans are in serious intellectual trouble — in danger of losing our hard-won cultural capital to a virulent mixture of anti-intellectualism, anti-rationalism and low expectations.”
Why evidence does the author give to prove that America is dumber than before? How does baby Einstein prove we’re getting dumber?

The evidence the author gives to prove americans are dumber than before is that our country is getting out of control. Baby Einstein proves we’re getting dumber because the education programs we have are making us stupider and more people are dropping out of schools.

What does Jacobs believe caused dumbness?

Laziness and little to no poor education is causing dumbness in americans.

What does the author mean by “anti-intellectualism?” What is it? What causes it?

Anti-intellectualism is that we are dumb. It’s the lack of effort put into something. The cause of it for example would be playing video games or watching tv instead of using your brain and knowledge from reading a book or doing something else academic.

What is the “erosion of general knowledge?”

The erosion of general knowledge are the things that get in the way of knowledge which is another factor is us getting stupider.
Summarize the 2nd to last paragraph (” That leads us to the third and final factor”).

The second to last paragraph is saying that its not just what we don’t know thats making us stupid its the fact that we think we don’t need to know everything. And we take it for granted the stuff we don’t know isn’t considered important.

Is she right? Explain with evidence from your own life.

I think she is somewhat right, because there has been times in school where the teachers are teaching you something and question and wonder why are we learning this and most of the time we come to the conclusion that it isn’t important, but really you can’t really decide whats important to know and whats not, because there is such a wide range of information with different purposes behind it’s knowledge.
